Coffee Dates

This collection of artworks consists of souvenirs from the past year, and each one of these paintings memorializes some treasured moments with the saints. They may have passed away from this life on earth, but I assure you, my friend, the saints are very much alive in heaven! The artwork flowed out of my sincere desire to know them better, and my inspiration came from their lives.

I looked at the liturgical calendar almost like a social calendar this year. I considered each saint's feast day as a coffee date, an opportunity to chat and get to know him/her just a little bit better. This year I've had dates with royalty, with the poor, with mothers, actors, priests, theologians, even soldiers! And they all had one thing in common:

They are beautiful, heavenly souls.

Heaven is full of so many different sorts or persons... Ethnicity, clothing, time period, and personality is so important to their role in the Church, both during their lifetime and ever since.

The first step in my creative process (after a simple prayer of invocation) is to research everything there is to know about the saint. Where did they live? When did they live? What was their culture like? What was their vocation, and what did they wear? How might their skin, eyes, and nose look? Is there anything that could indicate dominant personality traits?

Then, I'd start to play around with facial features and expressions. I tried to think of how their friends and family saw them...playful, serious, thoughtful, shy? My goal was to unite this with how I saw them, what struck me about their life, and to invite you into this friendship!

For each painting, I felt my way through a guiding sketch, and carefully applied layers of watercolor -a slow but rewarding process as each layer developed the image further.

My favorite thing about this collection is the simplicity of the colors and poses.

There is something youthful about the colors, something friendly about the eyes, and something vibrant about these persons, beyond what I intended to convey!

From Heart to Home

Inspiration for these pieces developed from my desire to "sit with the saints" on their feast day in my own home. Each painting has sat upon my mantel place, a bookshelf, or hung on a wall for some period of time, to remind me of the saintly friend looking over me. I imagine these paper pieces amongst other saint portraits framed on the mantel or in your family's place of prayer, with simple framing and matting.

Again, I'll include framing guides and recommendations online.
