Gentle Mother -Original Watercolor Painting
Blessed Virgin Mary
A Year of Saints: Created as part of the A Year of Saints Collection. Learn more about this collection and the outlook that shaped my process HERE.
Details: An original painting, unframed, 6.2x5.7 inches, pencil outline layered in high quality watercolor pigments on cold-pressed (textured) paper. Artist's iniitials are clearly visible in pencil.
Watercolor paintings develop layer by layer until the portrait comes into focus — vibrant and beautiful. This particular palette is delicate and bright, reminiscent of springtime.
This piece highlights the gentleness and humility of Our Lady. Her grace and downcast eyes reminds us to quiet our minds, and the calming blue of her robe leaves a feeling of peace and beauty. Her whole persona gently urges us to echo with her, "Fiat." The roses framing her add a motherly and feminine touch.
Inspiration: I've always been a deep admirer of Luca della Robbia, an incredibly inspired Italian sculptor. Some of his pieces adorn my alma mater, Thomas Aquinas College, and I've patricularly appreciated the relief of Our Lady outside St. Therese Dorm. She is strikingly beautiful, and I never tired of seeing her daily.
This painting is the first watercolor of Mary I ever attempted, and it was fitting that my inspiration be something so dear to my heart. The florals that surround her add a more delicate and feminine air to the portrait.
Framing: I imagine this painting matted or floating over a mat in a neutral white or cream color to highlight the summery palette and best showcase the portrait. I'd set it in a frame that complements your home’s aesthetic. Dwell on her tender love for you every time you pray by placing this lovely print on your mantle or a prayer corner. I'd also envision this piece as perfect for a nursery, with the blues and pinks appropriate for any gender.
