Handmaid of the Lord -Original Watercolor Painting
The Annunciation
A Year of Saints: Created as part of the A Year of Saints Collection. Learn more about this collection and the outlook that shaped my process HERE.
Details: An original painting, unframed, 9x12 inches, pencil outline layered in high quality watercolor pigments on cold-pressed (textured) paper. Artist's signature clearly visible in black marker-pen.
Watercolor paintings develop layer by layer until the portrait comes into focus. This particular palette is muted and deep.
The peice portrays the moment right before Mary said the words, "Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done unto me according to thy word." She is looking up at the angel, ready to give her response to his incredible message.
Inspiration: One of my favorite things about this peice is the simplicity of the image. This painting originated in part as a study of fabrics in watercolor. I was focused with facination at how thick fabric might sit heavily upon a subject, her pose and veil owning most of the page. The angel Gabriel is not pictured to give undivided attention to Our Lady in her determined, yet submissive pose: She looks like she is genuflecting to recieve a crown.
Framing: I imagine this painting floating over a mat in a neutral white or cream color, which would brighten the palette and best showcase the portrait. I'd set it in a simple frame that complements your home’s aesthetic, without distacting from the focus of the piece.
