St Augustine of Hippo -Original Watercolor Painting
Son of Saint Monica
A Year of Saints: Created as part of the A Year of Saints Collection. Learn more about this collection and the outlook that shaped my process HERE.
Details: An original painting, unframed, 4.5x6 inches, pencil outline layered in high quality watercolor pigments on cold-pressed (textured) paper. Artist's signature clearly visible in fine-tipped brown art pen.
Watercolor paintings develop layer by layer until the portrait comes into focus — glowing and intricate. This particular palette is warm and neutral, and the painting's small size makes for an interesting but not overwhelming statement.
Saint Augustine here is lamenting his past sins and praying for others who are leading a sinful life. This portrait leaves behind a feeling of awareness of our own faults, but also hope in Our Lord's saving grace. Both St. Augustine's story and his visiage should encourage us that no matter where we are, Our Lord can reach us if we only let Him in!
Inspiration: Saint Augustine of Hippo was an early Christian bishop of Hippo (modern-day northern Algeria) in the Roman Empire. As a Theology and Philosophy major in college, I have a particular affection for this great Doctor of the Church, whose writings are brilliantly intelligent, emotional, and inspiring.
As always, I researched tirelessly to honor the historical accuracy and heritage of this great saint. He was born in northern Algeria, leading many (including myself) to stereotype his visage as black in color. However, after much digging, I discovered his mother was a Berber woman, and his father was of Roman decent. I have tried my best to honor this in his coloring and features. His hair is in a "Roman bob," which was the style of the time, and his clothing (especially his pallium) depicts his status as bishop in the Church.
Framing: I imagine this painting matted or floating over a mat in a neutral white or cream color to accentuate the delicate ecolors and best showcase the portrait. I'd set it in a frame that complements your home’s aesthetic, perhaps in a wood or simple, thin metalic.
