Queen of Heaven -Original Watercolor Painting
The Assumption and Crowning of Mary
A Year of Saints: Created as part of the A Year of Saints Collection. Learn more about this collection and the outlook that shaped my process HERE.
Details: An original painting, unframed, 9x12 inches, pencil outline layered in high quality watercolor pigments on cold-pressed (textured) paper. Artist's signature clearly visible in light pencil.
Watercolor paintings develop layer by layer until the portrait comes into focus — glowing and intricate. This particular palette is radiant and bright, and the painting has a victorious air in both pose and color. Deep golds, delicate pinks, and dark blues characterize Our Lady's royal, triumphant Assumption into Heaven. You can almost hear the choirs of angels singing and trumpets blaring as they welcome their Queen of Heaven home.
Inspiration: This piece is meant to be a combination of the Virgin Mary's Assumption and Coronation, with key biblical elements laced throughout. I was overwhelmingly inspired by the Litany of Mary, in which we recite her various titles, and this image formed imediately in my heart.
Beginning at the bottom, Mary is "crushing the head of the Serpent," with the moon beneath her feet. She is in a white robe to represent her perpetual virginity, and a cloak and veil of gold has been placed upon her to reflect that she is "clothed in the sun." (Rev 12:1)
Simeon prophesied that a sword would pierce her heart. Here, she has been relieved of her seven sorrows, and they have been made golden and beautiful. (Luke 2:35)
She is crowned with 12 stars (Revelation again), in addition to her coronation as Queen of Heaven and Earth. The Holy Spirit overshaddows her, as her heavenly spouse. I imagine she is looking beyond Him at her Son, who is waiting with open arms. Her face is a mixture of incredible relief, joy, and awe as she rises to embrace Him.
Framing: I imagine this painting matted or floating over a mat in a neutral white or cream color to showcasse the vibrant palette and delicate detail. I'd set it in a frame that complements the color palette of your home’s aesthetic, particularly with a light-colored wood or simple metalic frame.
