St. Rita of Cascia -Original Watercolor Painting
A Year of Saints: Created as part of the A Year of Saints Collection. Learn more about this collection and the outlook that shaped my process HERE.
Details: An original painting, unframed, 4x5.5 inches, pencil outline layered in high quality watercolor pigments on cold-pressed (textured) paper. Artist's initials clearly visible in fine-tipped brown art pen.
This was a transition sketch for me, a combination of loose florals and A Year of Saints. It is a simple, two-layered portrait, and is truly perfect for a minimalist devotee of St. Rita. The sweet lettering balances the ray of light depicting her reception of the Stigmata. The roses are feminine, but deep in color, adding gravity and beauty to the otherwise simple painting.
Inspiration: St. Rita was truly an incredible woman. She endured domestic abuse, afamily vendetta, becoming a widow AND a bereaved mother, and somehow still managed to be well known for her peacefulness and faith.
I try to discover what each saint is "saying" on their feast day by discerning elements that strike me most particularly. Here I reflected upon her submission in all things, bearing suffering with love, humility, and courage.
Framing: I imagine this painting in a clear frame, or floating over a mat in a neutral white or cream color to complement the simple palette and best showcase the portrait. I'd set it in a frame that complements your home’s aesthetic, maybe in a simple, thin metalic.
