St. Agatha -Original Watercolor Painting
Patron of Breast Cancer Patients A Year of Saints: Created as part of the A Year of Saints Collection. Learn more about this collection and the outlook that shaped my process HERE. Details: An original painting, unframed, 5x6.8 inches, pencil outline layered in high quality watercolor pigments on cold-pressed (textured) paper. Artist's initials clearly visible in pencil. This piece highlights the youthfulness and suffering of Saint Agatha, a young virgin and martyr. The watercolor is delicately layered in light, feminine pigments, giving the portrait an air of simplicity and gentleness. Inspiration: Saint Agatha was only fifteen years old when her faith was put to the test! She heroically stayed true, even after tremendous torture. Learning about this saint was a powerful experience for me. I'd heard her name in the litany during the Eucharistic prayer of the Mass dozens of times, but I never knew her story (other than "virgin and martyr"). As always, I researched tirelessly to depict as accurate a depiction as my imagination could render. From the big things, like her ethnicity and clothing, to the tiniest detail, like her long hair, every element in this portrait was deliberate. A Sicilian beauty, St. Agatha suffered different forms of torture, all attempting to rob her of her faith and purity. Because of one of these tortures, she is the patron saint of breast cancer patients. She is also the patron of Sicily, rape victims, and young girls. Framing: I imagine this painting matted or floating over a mat in a neutral or light color to highlight the gentle palette and best showcase the portrait. I'd set it in a frame that complements your home’s aesthetic, maybe in a light-colored wood or simple, thin metalic. More information on how to best preserve and frame your artwork will come with your painting shippment. Please feel free to email me at rosalie.ardentdraws@gmail.com with any other questions!
